We are looking at some of these new notepads that use linux operating software. I understand there is a windows emulator that can be installed that should allow us to still use our fire panel software... all the usual suspects.....but has anyone ever tried it ??

vmware is what you want and its not an emulator but allows you to run virtual machines. You will then create a windows machine within your linux etc. Yes i have and do use vmware and run a few win2k3 servers within it. BUt you may have issues if the application tris to talk to the part by bypassing the os. ie win 98 only apps etc

Some of the netbooks also come with windows but it seems to bump the cost up to a point where I'm not sure its cost effective compared with some notebooks.

Under Linux you can install a program called "Wine" this allows certain windows programmes to run using native DLL's etc. Your mileage may vary but it is under constant development and does seem reasonably stable. VMWare may be the way to go, but a reasonable amount of setup is required.

afaik with wine you need some tuning to get it work properly. if i am correct chris uses gal gold with wine.

i'd prefer vodka though.
