esp-protocol Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 We are looking at some of these new notepads that use linux operating software. I understand there is a windows emulator that can be installed that should allow us to still use our fire panel software... all the usual suspects.....but has anyone ever tried it ??
james.wilson Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 vmware is what you want and its not an emulator but allows you to run virtual machines. You will then create a windows machine within your linux etc. Yes i have and do use vmware and run a few win2k3 servers within it. BUt you may have issues if the application tris to talk to the part by bypassing the os. ie win 98 only apps etc securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.
Guest RJBsec Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Some of the netbooks also come with windows but it seems to bump the cost up to a point where I'm not sure its cost effective compared with some notebooks.
Jonah Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Under Linux you can install a program called "Wine" this allows certain windows programmes to run using native DLL's etc. Your mileage may vary but it is under constant development and does seem reasonably stable. VMWare may be the way to go, but a reasonable amount of setup is required.
georgahti Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 afaik with wine you need some tuning to get it work properly. if i am correct chris uses gal gold with wine. i'd prefer vodka though.
