Password Reset For Vision Factory Montage Dvr

I'm looking for some help please.

A family friend has just taken over a business that uses a DVR system called Vision Factory Montage to manage its CCTV estate - I am not in possession of the exact model reference but know that it can support 32 camera inputs.

His problem is that on start-up the product asks for a password (not sure whether userid as well) and he does not know what this is. He has not got any instructions that shed light on how to reset nor has he been able to get a response from the previous business owner and it appears that Vision Factory are no longer trading.

I am not knowledgeable about CCTV products and was asked if I can help because I know a bit about computers! I've found limited info online regarding the technical side of this product which is why I am posting here on the offchance that someone on this forum knows a bit about the system and can provide some advice?

My specific thoughts/questions are: -

a) Is there a 'hidden' installer/admin password?

B ) Is there a way of getting to the operating system on startup (like accessing the BIOS when loading a PC) and reset - I'm at the other end of the country so am not sure whether the password is at hardware operating system side or within software - from the verbal description it seems to 'boot' up then ask for the password.

c) Is there a physical way of resetting - e.g. jumper on motherboard as PC's with BIOS often have?

d) What is the operating system - as described it doesn't appear to be windows (which makes good sense!) is it Embedded Linux and if so does anyone know which flavour and whether password reset possible?

e) Would it be possible to connect the DVR to a PC via USB or other means, view the hard drive contents and identify a password file or similar?

f) Would it be possible to 'crack' the password using suitable software - i.e. by connecting to another computer?

g) As a last resort, if he reformats the hard drive he is clearly going to lose drivers/software etc and has not found any CD or DVD containing drivers/software which I presume is factory loaded anyway? What I wondered was if he did reformat and then installed windows (or possibly Linux) along with a commercially available product (ZoneMinder?) would the operating system/software be able to detect the various connection ports and allow this to function again?

If anyone is able to provide some guidance it would be very much appreciated!!!

Apologies if this is the wrong forum - it is CCTV related though I did consider whether this should go in the control panel/programming forum.
