ian.cant Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 But, why would the alarm go off, if these lights trip the switch? Your alarm most likely has a flat battery, you now need to call your alarm company to check and test the panel and battery. More importantly maybe, you have a fault on your electrical system that needs looking at by a sparky, its probably something getting wet.

You may actually be right on both accounts, the outside lights are wet, and alarm's battery is out. Many thanks to all the help guys, I will let you know how I get along.
Alarm Co Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 OkHere is what I have just done The only thing I cannot test are the lights outside the house, as it has not been working for a long time now (they have no bulbs) and it is possible they accumulated water. there you go ....................
the-oneil Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 I have a question though, if the alarm's battery is indeed out, do i need a professional to replace it? or is it a DIY job? And would it mean that the alarm lost all its stored memory & codes so it would requires re-programming? Thanks
james.wilson Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 it depends on your panel. While you 'can' chnage it yourself you can do a lot of damage if you get it wrong. If your in any doubt id get it done. You should also have it serviced regulally so might be better to kill 2 birds as it were. some panels do forget all programming on power down the newer ones dont, assuming the battery goes on right etc. securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.
the-oneil Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 OK Here is a question - which i know is subject to personal preference and is subjective - would you guys think it is worth replacing my alarm system with new PD6662 certified alarm? Or would you consider what I have is sufficient? Current system: A 12 years old Gardtec 350 series consists of A Control unit with built in keypad & internal sounder (located under the stairs cupboard) 3 PIR (in Kitchen, living room & landing) + 2 door contacts (front & rear doors) +External sounder Accommodation: 3 bed semi in West London (TW7), with a small garden. We keep Jewellery, laptops, expensive audiovisual equipments & sentimental items at home Lifestyle: We have no pets and work from 9am to 6PM - go on a 3 weeks holiday every year and the very occasional weekend away. Your advice & recommendation of particular systems would be appreciated Budget
james.wilson Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 the reg (ie pd6662 or 4737) is pretty irrelevant to you to be fair. BUt i would say IMO audible only systems are useless or near useless unless you have a neighour that will respond. usually these are at work as well so you are relying on the perp being scared off... this happens less as they know few people respond to audible only systems. ie if you hear an alarm do you investigate or make a mental note to complain to your neighbour next time you see them etc. I also feel diallers while having some uses are not as good as a digicom. Ideally obviously you want dual patch signalling but the cost of this normally isnt justified on a normal domestic. For example digital signalling to an arc is about securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.
the-oneil Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 Do I have to have my alarm monitored by the same company that installs it for me? Or can I shop around? - sorry if this is a silly question. Also, am I right to assume that a monitored alarm needs to be a PD6662?
Guest RJBsec Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Do I have to have my alarm monitored by the same company that installs it for me? Or can I shop around? - sorry if this is a silly question. For a variety of reasons its better arranged by the installing company but its not mandatory and its irrelevant where no police response is required. Also, am I right to assume that a monitored alarm needs to be a PD6662? If its installed by an approved company, yes. If it's monitored for police response, yes. If its fitted by the local 'cowboy' and not requiring police response, no. Recommendation: Get it installed and monitored by an approved company (SSAIB or NSI) and ensure that a certificate of conformity is provided.

Thank you for the recommendation. We have our current system wired, however the Control unit is located in an under the stairs cupboard and it contains the keypad, which means we have to go to it to set & unset the alarm. If we are to put a new system, we'd like to 1- Have the keypad located somewhere more convenient. 2- Add a (break glass detector) & (smoke detector). Can someone recommend a good quality system (control unit) that can accept a hybrid connectivity (ie the current wired PIRs & contact sensors) + (wireless keypad & wireless sensors).
