Texecom Or Honeywell

Hello All,

Finally going to fit an alarm, instead of relying on the debris of the old wireless alarm left here by the previous owner (doesn't work, but used it as a dummy box).

I fitted a Texecom alarm for a friend a couple of years ago and had no problems. Still working very nicely!

For my own, I was going to fit the same, but now there's a lot of Honeywell stuff about which I didn't notice a couple of years ago.

Am I better off fitting a Honeywell ? They're a big name and that alone tempts me. I would expect it to be half way decent. Price is very similar to Texecom.

This is for a medium sized semi. I was thinking along the lines of 1 blank end station, 2 remote keypads, 1 of which must have LCD display, 5 very decent PIR's, and a door relay. 2 real Bell boxes, Odyssey type (not E version). Proximity fob might be nice but not essential. Possible internal siren but not sure due to the dog. Not bothered at all about speech or text diallers, got friendly neighbours all round.

Are Texecom a bit more DIY than Honeywell ? Is the Honeywell a better finished product ? Texecom would be an Excel, maybe a Premier...prefer Grade 2 to Grade 1.

Your comments would be much appreciated.

cheers

Ars.

Talking from personal experience I would fit a Tex-cos I'm used to them! and they're very user/engineer friendly, the Excel is a grade 2,whereas the prems are grade 3 (if a metal end station)-just my preferance though!.

A Castle Euro Mini might be worth a look but guess you're on about Accenta G4 from Honeywell can have lcd and prox but not on same keypad.

Thanks for the info guys.

I chose Texecom/Honeywell because they're well supported and I can buy them anywhere - could go out and come back in half an hour with everything I need to fit it. The Gardtec stuff seems a bit harder to get hold of, and I thought Texecom might be more suitable for DIY because they're so popular - like Rulland said, very use friendly. No problems with the previous one. Decent reviews for the Gardtec though.

Not heard of Castle Euro but I see one on Ebay for

Really I was wondering if the popularity of Texecom's makes them more ... vulnerable. Like a 10 year old Ford Fiesta.

Not really - they can be bought anywhere and manuals and tech support are available to anyone and his dog so for DIY that's probably what you need. IMO there are much better options for pro installers (others won't agree) but that should not influence you.

If you are really concerned about vulnerability then get an installer in to carry out a risk assessment and install a system with remote monitoring and possibly dual-path signalling, depending on the risk.

G4 gets my vote aswell, also you mention a dog you might need pet sensors instead of pir's if the dog gets the run of the house.

Good luck.........

I wasn't too confident about the reliability of pet PIR's, I thought they were probably better but not infallible. The dog is shut in one room when we're out, or she empties the office/lounge/bathroom bins. I'm just going to zone that room out when reqd...plus it separates her from an internal siren if I put one in....
