Big Bad Cameras In The News Again

Dunno about anywhere else, but on the M42 roughly between the M6 and the M40 there are what appear to be ANPR cameras at the end of every slip road, and a few on the gantries.

Presumably, as this is around B'ham airport, they are at least in part anti terrorist measures. Thats OK by me. But linking in town centre CCTV, with a global database looks like the thin end of a big wedge.

The ANPR cameras can be of value. Point proven here in Bradford with the shooting of the WPC. Fact that the main culprit slipped out of country via one of the airports dressed as a woman is another story!

where i draw the line is the use of by the general run of the mill thick coppers. We're all terrorists (in their eyes) so they may/will act accordingly.

Despite the rumours, Town Centre CCTV systems are not connected to the global ANPR database, as specialist cameras are normally required.

True

The fact that the national ANPR network is such a huge and expensive project is one issue in itself, but when you start seeing anonymous ANPR vans repeatedly driving around residential streets on what is effectively a revenue generating exercise ( i.e. locating tax expired vehicles), then there is a very strong risk that public support may turn very quickly.

It's also important to remember that ANPR is not 100% reliable, has a fairly well documented achilles heel (which I'm not going to restate here), and as far as I'm aware, is fairly impotent in terms of dealing with vehicles registered overseas (as there is generally no registered uk address for the owner, held on the system).

It is undoubtedly a very useful tool for the police, but I am concerned about issues such as regulation and proportionality, certainly in terms of the network of fixed cameras.

I don't know if anyone is interested, but I did highlight one ANPR manufacturer in the brief IFSEC Show Review I put together a few days ago - if you're curious, it's available as a .pdf download here:-

Perhaps if you read the news article that the OP refers to.......

"A number of local councils are signing up their Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems to the ANPR network. As long as the cameras are technically good enough, they can be adapted to take the software.

In towns such as Bradford, Portsmouth and Luton that means greater coverage for the police and more journeys captured and recorded. "

Last time I looked at it the TrafficMaster system used a "crippled" form of ANPR.

It takes the centre section (maybe 4 or 5?) of the registration only and then tries to match it against the same data further down the road. Doesn't matter if it's nowhere near 100% of course for their purposes.

Over to the conspiracy theorists now........ :P

It 'was' supposed to be first two and last two digits, but as I said, does anyone really think that a nationwide camera system like this is funded by people buying trafficmaster units! Ha!!

luggs, i do yeah, cos i dont think its a camera system. Have a look ata unit next time you see one. There is no cam, nor an IR emitter. Some of the cams on the motorway do have ir etc as they are anpr, but the tm units are different.

Must admit I have mixed feelings.

Strategically placed ANPR is OK by me, but a grid system with general UK coverage is a bit OTT.

OTT.....too right subs

What shocked me was lack of regulation in the use of ANPR, the ICO has very little say in its use and the police seem to self regulate

You're probably right, I know it was a subset but can't recall exactly which.

However to do that it needs the capability to read it all. :ninja:

Think 20 years down the line, with more sophisticated software........and say, 50% of CCTV linked to a large police ANPR database.

CCTV is how I've made a living for 20+ years, but this worries me.
