I'm looking to fit a shop with a 16 channel dvr, but they wont to use a 42" Television, I've told them the picture is going to look rubbish because of the size, even using the VGA output it's still not going to look the best, Samsung do a SRD-1650 with HDMi output for the monitor, has anyone used a DVR with HDMi output if so whats the picture quality like?, the camera's are going to be all 520TVL high resolution colour camera's so I shouldn't have any problems there

Cannot see the issue with a 42".

Used bigger.

Every corner shop now has a big screen with dire kit.

Funny really, cams not looking at high value goods for instance.

Not watching blind corners.

Loved doing retail, one set up followed the biggest looking "CRIM" around the store.

Followed her all around the store, notified manager ( remember was setting up cams). He asked me to be there when she was stopped as she left.

Was a store detective...................................we did all laugh eventually...........:D

Biggest shoplifting, OAP`s with tins of tuna, salmon, corned beef.

Well it was then.

Blimey someone stop me, just stepped back in time.

I agree with Paul we have several leisure centres with 42" plasmas behind the reception showing 30 or so cameras looks great, you need to make sure that the monitor is positioned following the below chart

......... Size..........Viewing Distance

  • 26 Inch – 3.2 feet to 8 feet
  • 30 Inch – 3.8 feet to 10 feet
  • 32 Inch – 4.2 feet to 11 feet
  • 34 Inch – 4.4 feet to 12 feet
  • 40 Inch – 5 feet to 14 feet
  • 42 Inch – 5.5 feet to 15 feet
  • 46 Inch – 6 feet to 16.5 feet
  • 50 Inch – 6.5 feet to 17.5 feet
  • 55 Inch – 7 feet to 19 feet
  • 60 Inch – 7.5 feet to 21 feet
  • 63 Inch – 8 feet to 22 feet
  • 65 Inch – 8.5 feet to 23 feet

Put a system in my own house and was expecting it to look poor on the 50" Plasma but was quite surprised despite the fact it is run off the composite output, obviously split screen looks better than full screen but looks much better than some 19" flat screens.

Really it depends heavily on how a screen renders standard definition and the change in aspect ratio, do not be miss lead by DVRs with HDMI and promise HD video viewing, many full featured VGA outputs can easily match them.

I can understand your concern but if you have the opportunity test it, you may be surprised.

fitted a 32 way apollo with 2 x 42" HDs, worked a treat, also same dvr with a 40".

the apollo's are half HD and the quality is spot on, better than vga by far

edit

in light of the 2 vga posts above, i should add, in my opinion

I really can't be ar**** with it anymore.

I do not blame the low expectation that installers have over the performance of VGA on DVRs, to be quite honest many implemented only the bare minimum so resolution was poor and general performance was poor. More recently with the addition of HDMI, they have had to up their game and implemented higher spec VGA ports. These higher spec vga ports are still cheaper than implementing HDMI (due to royalties etc). HDMI has been used mainly for marketing reasons and in my experience do not offer better performance than the higher spec VGA ports offering similar performance but with the cheaper VGA screens, similar result but cheaper overall cost.

The VGA out of my DVR goes through an HD multiroom amp to all the flatscrens in the house using component video. Looks ok although the images are a bit cropped (I guess) due to the aspect of the tvs.
