Residents Concerned Over Fire Safety In Apartment Block

A fire risk assessment may need to be carried out by the owners of a city apartment block, after residents expressed their concerns over the lack of fire safety provisions.

Under the terms of the Fire Safety Order 2005, individuals responsible for blocks of flats or apartments must carry out fire risk assessments in all communal areas, ensuring that an up-to-date fire management plan is in place.

However, the Exeter Express & Echo reports that residents at Powhay Mills, on Bonhay Road, are concerned that manager Signpost Housing Association is not doing enough.

The father of one former resident told the news provider that there are no visible smoke detectors and alarms, fire escape signs or fire extinguishers in any of the communal areas..

"There are no signs telling people how to get out of the building in an emergency and no emergency exits," said John Broomfield, whose son lived in the building throughout last year.

"There is only one way in and one way out, a lift and a flight of stairs. There is no fire detection system and no smoke alarms in the communal areas."

I live in a converted mill, there is no fire system in the communal areas. It has 2 fire exit stairwells and emg lighting. Appartments have mains smoke and heat.
