Guest Roy B Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Hi all I was hoping for a bit of advice. I'm a qualified sparky although I've not worked in the trade for some time. I'm currently fitting a Honeywell Optima Compact alarm and Intellisense Sounder to my own house. I've fitted a few alarms in the past and not been this confused with any of them. Excuse my ignorance, but any advice would be gratefully received. I've completely wired and connected all PIRs, door contact, Remote keypad and Sounder. However, as soon as I connect the battery in the sounder it pierces my eardrums. I've now installed the link in the tamper connections in the main panel(the sounder tamp, TA & PA). So, what next? If I now connect the battery in the sounder I'm guessing it won't see a break in it's own tamper because of the link I've now inserted in TA. But will it not see that the tamper for the main panel is open and go off anyway? Should I put the covers back on the main panel, connect the battery in the sounder, take the cover back off the panel, switch on the power then connect the main battery. I guess that when it's in Engineer mode, I can take the cover off and remove the links? Like I said at the start - confused (and not helped by the 'rubbish' manual that comes with the unit!).
Alarm Protection Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 I presume the panel is on when you are connecting the battery to the external sounder? What sounder is it because the noise will not stop untill the sounder lid is closed on the tamper switch. !
MrHappy Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 depends on product, assuming you've wired right bell boxes normally sound when the battery is connected, some stop, some won't useless power is present, bell tampers closed & trigger monitored... also wear ear defenders, with bells, drills & ladders on cars its something I should have been doing earlier in life Mr Veritas God
Guest Roy B Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Thanks guys, I think you may have answered my question already. Nope, I don't have power to the main panel yet. So (following the instruction for the Intellisense sounder), I'll connect the battery and close the cover, then slide down the ladder and connect the main battery and power up. The instructions suggest that on power-up, the tamper links should be connected, but I don't really understand why. OK, the alarm will sound until the lid is on the sounder, but that should be it, all the other circuits are complete. Or am I still not getting it?
Guest Big balls large Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 The sounder is seperate to the control panel. Bit of a clue there.
Guest Roy B Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Thanks Big Balls. I hadn't realised! Of course they're not separate now as I've connected them together with a length of 6core!!! ;-)

Alarm Protection Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Just say to the neighbours there will be a bit of noise for 5 mins while i connect the alarm up! Power on and wrap up the bell, back down and programme the control panel. Remember during test make sure the bell tamper works. !
norman Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Is that you Billy? as in 'no mates' or 'liar' ? Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

I was hoping there was some way to prevent annoying everyone around, but I think I'll just go for it! I think that if I connect the battery at the bell, put the cover on, slide down the ladder, connect the main battery, switch on the power, programme 'engineering mode' - it should be no more than 5 min's. That could be famous last words of course ;-)
