Can you recommend a good system??

Hi,

I'd like a new alarm system, here's what I think I need, if there's anything wrong with it and you can think of any other ideas please let me know. If you could recommend a good reliable make and model I'd be very grateful!

It's for a 3 bedroom house, I'd like a main control panel installed in the cylinder cupboard (out of the way) with a PIR sensor in the living room, dining room and upstairs landing. I'd like an illuminated keypad for setting and unsetting the alarm in the hall behind the door, the same size as a standard light switch. I'd like door sensors on the front door, kitchen door and rear patio door. I'd also like a PIR sensor in the detached garage, there is an underground pipe for the electrics can this be used or would a seperate pipe need to be laid?

I'd like smoke alarms too, if I had mains powered ones with battery backup should these be linked to the the alarm system or are they a seperate system?

All cables must be hidden and not stapled to skirting boards, door frames etc, so walls, floors, driveway etc can be channelled out as the house is being completley renovated.

Phew! Thanks in advance for any info/suggestions :)

All of the above is pretty standard stuff to a professional installer, so meeting your requirements should not be difficult, best thing do would be to get a surveyor in to discuss your needs in detail, i would reccomend getting three companies to quote and then choose one of them that best fits your requirements.

Post what area you are in and some of the forum members will be able to help you further.

Colin.

Hi Dan,

Ring 0113 294 6700 and ask to speak to Kevin @ Optica Security Systems he is SSAIB and will provide a no obligation quote along with some advice. Tell him Steve gave you the number.

Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.

Hi Dan,

As stated above, it's a very easy install - especially if you're in the process of renovation as the property may be empty and so easier to left floor boards etc.

Other points tho:

keep your entry zones to a minimum - front door only is the best.

Id recomend a PIR in the hall (on an entry or part entry zone) as it prevents false alarms on a morning.

Do you have a dog/cat? Im assuming the kitchen is at the rear therefore it should be protected with either a PIR or a vibration detector on the window.

Expect a keypad to be a little bit bigger than a standard light switch.

I'd also like a PIR sensor in the detached garage, there is an underground pipe for the electrics can this be used or would a seperate pipe need to be laid?

The surveyor would advise on this - if they can use it then the cable MUST be screened.

Does your complete renovation include an electrical re-wire? If so then the sparky will be fitting smokes unless you tell him otherwise.

Good reliable stuff:

Gardtec,

Galaxy,

Menvier,

Texecom (Premier range)

but more inportant to get yourself a good, reliable installer. Your local crime prevention department will normally give out a list of approved alarm installers if you ring them and ask.

Hi all, thanks for the advice!

I'll be in touch with everyone that has left their number, Wilsdens is already on my list :)

I've had one quote already and it is for this system:

Veritas Excel (Pic Attached)

£360 fully fitted to the exact requirements I listed on here. Is that a decent quote?

Thanks again,

Dan

The excel aint a bad system, although I do still prefer the Premier. And £350 sounds pretty reasonable to me (slightly on the cheap side for 4 PIR's, Control Panel, Smoke Detector, 2 door contacts) what sensors are they using? Make sure they aint the cheap and chearful ones! U will at least need one dual-tec for garage, prefer them throughout the house but it adds to expense.
