Driller Posted August 29, 2011 Author Posted August 29, 2011 Hrm, well natural stone will be a good bit more resistant to graffiti - they tend to like a flatter surface and the make up of a natural stone wall tends to prevent this. That said, you are probably flogging a dead horse in terms of prevention, if they're going to spray it, they'll spray it, regardless of cameras. I'd probably err towards cameras on poles observing from high up, with a vandal proof dome up there. But I wouldn't be expecting anything more than being able to see when it happened! What's the light levels like at night? That'll dictate a bit towards the camera choice, if you have a street light or other lighting of your own you can probably look at high resolution b/w or colour, but if you have little light then you might be better off with vandal proof IR surface mount domes. Blimey, Cyberprog you seem to know a lot about graffiti! I appreciate what you're saying about the chance of catching anyone but just the presence of the cameras may disuade any would-be mal-doers, nobody has cameras around here. Vandal proof dome sounds good, light levels are good due to street lighting, my Techwin AV domes have no trouble with these light levels so maybe I should just get some more of these. There seems to be a new breed of ready made vandal proof box/bullets on the market which look interesting.

Cyberprog Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 You might well attract attention to the wall by adding cameras mind. The sort of people who do graffiti, tend (in general) to be fairly brazen in the lengths they'll go to. Putting CCTV on it is like a red flag to a bull in some cases, and they'll be likely to tag it just to mess with you! Not to mention all you'll see is a hoodied teen with a can! If at all possible, get the cameras up and out of reach. Vandal Proof != Paint Proof, and keep them discreet. You'd obviously need to ensure that you've covered all your bases with regards to the DPA and so on as well as appropriate signage.
Driller Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 Thanks again for your very helpful advice Cyberprog I see what you mean that cameras can attract attention and that the whole thing is a catch22 really. They will go up on poles high and discreet as you suggest.
Scotmod Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Are you doing it yourself or getting it installed? What's the cost of redoing the wall if it gets graffitied?
