I wouldnt have a clue about veritas or optima (as a sparky i fitted a few) without reading the manual.

I'm sure even you could manage to navigate your lard **** in front of a couple PIRs before the exit time expired, who needs a manual? ;)

The industry is driving its own standards down. Most will work on anything and support it. Cant be a specialist industry with that attitude. IMO your either a specialist ie like the independant merc/ford etc specialists that exist. Or your a back street garage that will muddle through on anything. Yes i suppose panels are basically the same but you cant train on every panel in existance unless you train on those you support and keep that supported list manageable. Same in all diciplines IMO, fire cctv etc

I may not understand your array of contract equipment but i do know thats not the way to do any type of service. Using the post above you sound like the back street garage that charges for work they dont do. i do hope james is wrong and the industry hasnt sank this low.

Im not and it has.

There is another spin on this though. If your struggling for work and need the work and you know you wont get the job if you charge for a panel etc then you may feel forced. Once you have done it a few times it becomes par the course.

We as an industry have a 'sell on price' attitude. You see it all the time and in many trades. I avoid tenders that score heavily on price for example.

The problem with the sell on price attitude is that there will ALWAYS be someone cheaper and if you have trained all your customers over the years that your the best cos your cheap, when that cheaper person comes along your contracted (maybe) client will do what you have always told them to do, buy the cheapest.

We are a service industry. We offer 24/7 onsite support to our customers (some to anyone). No other trade does that for the amount we charge. That backup costs real money. Paying engineers on call, paying them to drive to the call, paying them while on the call, paying them to get home. Fuelling the vehicle etc etc.

The industry has moved down this cheapest is best model and we see that with all the imported cctv on offer. Its tat, we know its tat but its cheap and its all the client can afford. Id like a porsche but i cant afford one, well not a new one. Should i see if i can get one from china?

The intruder gear doesnt have this problem yet but it will come.

I used to drink with a bloke that used to work at land rover, he was still there at the time. Always moaning about why people should buy quality, keep jobs in the uk etc. He then said after all this that he had been to the garden centre that day as he needed a spade. Found a great looking british made one for £24.99

Then he saw the value one, made in china for £4.99.

Laughed in the pub why anyone would pay 25 quid for a spade as was pleased he had saved 20 quid. Made redundant shortly after.

But this is the attitude. I do try and get things for the right money, cars etc. We recently bought a volvo v60 for my sales guy. Decided what we wanted and then drove the price down. However we didnt buy a 'car' we bought a specific model and make. Most people buy an alarm or a camera system. Then its impossible to compare. Grading of intruder has not helped this as there is still scope to skimp on detection.

Haha it was a joke Jeff. I'm fussy on comms sites and wireless. In general we don't do enough bells only to care whats installed. As long as its installed to the standard in force at the time that will do for a bells only takeover.

PS: Speaking of back street garages, why do you run that clapped out Punto? I thought it was a Pier Alarms car at first............ just saying.

I agree, however for as long I've been involved in alarms the most successful company's in my region have done the opposite to your list.

Your defo learning. The Punto was a pool car until last year, had it from new and its not done 30k which for a diesel is low millage, It has a full service history. I also have one very old Piccasso which has in excess of 150k and in daily use. The Picasso will go this year and the buyer will get an old main dealer serviced car with high millage in great condition.Your point being?

Due to the nature of the beast the £99 Yale "security system" in B&Q is no different from the panel that costs twice as much.

I have always maintained the fact our industry is closely linked to TV's. A well informed customer will research, know their budget and have a rough idea of what they want (contracted customer) Joe Blaggs will plod into Currys, tell the salesman they have £300 and want a 52" LED, 3D Panasonic. (bells only)

Unfortunately this customer will always be around and there will always be someone who is willing to spend the time fleecing them out of cash.

Great advice to boot

"Because the PIR Sensors can be placed anywhere inside a building"

The question is though. Better than an old Bentley or Optima? :plane:

The kind of customer that looks at this kind of thing are the same ones that balk at the mere thought of spending money on an alarm system.

However...£19.99. Bloody bargain!
