sixwheeledbeast Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 Liking the unistrut idea myself. That way you are not drilling/screwing into undamaged asbestos etc etc. It can be done in stages then. You will still have to cover he stuff in plastic sheeting and use PPE. Plastic Sheeting Installed covering asbestos Install unistrut and trayworks for cabling Remove Sheeting etc and dispose as COSHH. Install cabling Install devices
antinode Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I doubt screwing directly through a peice of SA trunking and into the panel is going to release any dust (would be contained by the adhesive of the trunking) I think something along the lines of applying silicone/no more nails to the back of the trunking near each fixing point before offering up to the ceiling, and doing the same inside the trunking where the screw will pass through will make sure that any dust generated by the screw will be totally contained. I've never done it as I personally won't go near the stuff. Definitely think it would be a good idea employing the services of your local asbestos specialist on a consulatncy basis. Regards to the vibration from fixing to the wall being a no no, aren't you going to have to fix the door retainers to the wall anyway? Can be a costly thing to get wrong... I remember an incident about 4 years ago where our local council's approved security contractor removed a ceiling panel in the comms room of a high school when installing CCTV that turned out to be asbestos. They had to get in a specialist asbestos contractor to clean the room and monitor the air. Luckily for them it was out of term time. Trade Member
jb-eye Posted July 30, 2012 Author Posted July 30, 2012 Basicaly your all thinking down the same lines. Thank you for your input and i really do appreciate discussing this. Its one that will have to be done right and already i dont like the cheapest sub because IMO he wasnt concerned enough. Im thinking down the lines of asking a mate who used to work for me and he has a rep to uphold and besides i trust him. He wont be cheap but the job can stand it and he wont cause me a worry. Oxo Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 It is possible, read http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/a1.pdf . However it will require a registered contractor as the works will last longer than 2 hours or mean the use of more than one person ( This sheet is NOT appropriate if work lasts more than one hour per week for a worker, or two hours in total for two or more workers; use an HSE licensed contractor for such work.). So the simple answer is no for you fo do it.

If you are not touching it but working/drilling close to it the 2 hour rule is not applicable. Hence why I think unistrut idea is best. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/a20.pdf
Oxo Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I would agree with unistrut across but the original statement was. I am proposing to run a YT3 self adhesive trunking onto the asbestos ceiling and screw drywall screws through the trunking into the asbestos.
sixwheeledbeast Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 I would agree with unistrut across but the original statement was. If that's the question then no, I wouldn't disturb the asbestos at all. If you can do it by other means, this is best as per HSE guidelines. I was assuming we were looking for another solution.

Scotmod Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 The way we do it with the councils up here is sticky back trunking, marshal tuflex call master boxes and some no nails. Put your trunking up, get it in place and then go around with your perm marker and dot your fixing holes. Get your asbestos contractors in. (theirs is in house) and they do they rest. Saves so much hassle and the cost isn't too great if explained properly to the client. We have just done a job similar to one you describe using this method. It has the least amount of intrusion and at least you can then get some third party accreditation on it. Surely worth it if your the RP. Saying that if it's still to expensive, uninstructed 30mil of the ceiling with standoffs either side will also do the trick, paint it afterwords to matching the ceiling and after a while they will forget its there.
Amps Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 I personally won't go near the stuff. I wonder how many times you have drilled through it without knowing? scary stuff
