CATS AND ALARMS

I've recently moved into a house with an OPTIMA XL6, with two IR sensors.

Not long ago I put a nail through one of the wires leading to the bell (doh!).

After the alarm finally stopped ringing, the control panel is stuck on TAMPER.

I have since had a cat move in with me.

What I want to know is, is it worth getting the alarm fixed (if so, how?) or will the cat trigger off the IR sensors?

If it's best to start again from scratch, are there any recommendations on types of alarm systems that won't be triggered by cats coming and going through the cat flap?

The cabling should be ok... but I would get a new panel and possibly new bell box/sensors - depending on how old they are and if they need replacing.

You could use pet immune sensors, although personally I dont think much of them... alternatively I would just have the kitchen perimeter armed and let the cat just use the kitchen... not go anywhere else in the house when you are out.

If your willing to spend a bit of money, get a fresh alarm installed. Hopefully, your new alarm will be installed better as a bell cable(most cables) in a house shouldn't really be seen and shouldn't be buried in plaster(unless it's a new-build). If they are seen, they should be in trunking making it less likely to have a nail out through it! :0)

Although, having said that, some of the neatest installs are only a new curtain rail away from disaster!

I have found the Texecom pet immune sensors to be quite effective, especially for cats rather than large dogs, but just be carefull they're not fitted to look at your stairs or other furniture, etc that your cat may climb on. If a pet is high up in the sensors field of view, it is likely to cause an activation.
