My library books are tagged.

They know what I borrow, when, when it`s due back. If one of the little (Insert your word of choice here) baskets try to nick one.

What time they are returned, if late and the fine applicable (Teach me to borrow more than 3 a month).

How about asking first before saying rubbish!

In a previous life (quality assurance) came across a company that had to devise an inspection to ensure that batteries were included In the final package, iirc they did this threw some sort of capacitance detection. This may not work with modern phone batteries but when you consider a battery as a typical component in bomb making, there are surely detection methods.

But the point here is that detecting a retail packaged phone box with all accessories is a different prospect than detecting just a phone (I.e. no battery, charger, etc with all packaging removed).

I'm sorry but you will not detect capacitance through free air (and inside a sealed retail package) at a meters distance. Simply will not work. Bombs, by their nature of you wanting to detect them primed and about to go off, will be powered, which is entirely different (RF noise etc). A modern mostly glass and plastic phone without power is the equivelent of a dead squirrel at a metres distance under a coat / down your pants. Undetectable (other than based on size of pants).

You missed the point while trying to knock holes in a suggestion that a previous company has used albeit different circumstances which I pointed out.

Your arrogance is not becoming!

It would be nice and easier if the manufacturers/packagers put RFID inside the packaging, if a Library can afford to tag books worth £2.00 in a charity shop then a phone worth hindreds retail it would add nothing measurable to the costs already incured. As the volume of passive tags needed would considerably reduce the overall cost ( A quick bit of reasearch shows $0.05 per tag) and if in Rupees, or another subcontinent even less.

Ranges are from 0.5 mtr to 25mtr so easy enough for the average bonded warehouse or other storage facility to impiliment. Even the shops could benefit after working for one major phone retailer and seen another at first hand it is a seriously needed bit of tech.

You typing from your phone :teehee:

I see your point, the makers prefering the "theft" to maximise production. Then again with the rage for the latest tech, they are probably at max production anyway.

How many of us can could the number of old handsets we have?

Looking at the image, I'd be disappointed if a walkthough detector was unable to sense that,
