amateurandy Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 99% sure its a smoke detector, searching around the forum, i bet you get the beeping smoke detector question everyday of your lives Q. So why is it so difficult to tell what and where exactly is making that beep? A. Because it's a sound that human ears have not evolved to locate precisely. The same problem afflicts ambulances, fire engines, etc. especially; I remember reading that one service (in Yorkshire maybe?) were experimenting with a completely different mixture of sounds that drivers and pedestrians could actually tell what direction it was coming from. Reduced collisions and speeded up responses. Dunno where that got to though..... So, why don't fire alarm manufacturers take this on board and manufacture something that we CAN actually tell what it is and where it is when it makes a noise? And cost is not in my opinion a good enough excuse. Suggestions anyone?
Mister_Dave Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Here in York we have multi tone sirens on the emergency vehicles. I still cant tell where its comming from though. I have never had that problem with smoke alarms as i usually take out the old ones and put 12v burglar alarm ones in . Dave Oxendale York based security systems engineer.
Brian c Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 That's what strobe's are for! only messin', I remeber hearing the same thing, on the news, I think. Definitely a good idea for the emergency services If you don't know......ask.
CompostCORNER Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 It's weird though how so many customers, upon hearing a beep, blame the intruder alarm. If only they knew that unless it's programmed for door chime, any beep on an intruder alarm system is always accompanied by some sort of notification on the keypads.
neil.c Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 The mother-in-law had a cocatiel which she mentioned on various occasions would not shut up. Which I took no notice of, as you do. Some weeks later whenever I see the bird cage it always seems to have a sheet over it, I mention this only to be told it still will not shut up. I stop and have a listen then fumble around on top of a diplay cabinet near the bird, I turn up a smoke detector that had been removed for decorating and never refitted. The funny thing was this had been going on for the best part of a year.
Guest dale Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 We have the multi-tone "beep crack" sirens in South Yorkshire... they only switch them on when they are getting stuck in traffic... otherwise they just use the normal siren... and their horn! They are pretty good but you cant work out what the hell it is until you see a fire engine hurtling towards you.
