james.wilson Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Following on from another topic We run various SME servers in various locations. All cross backup each other on shedules. All are monitored by nagios (we also use this to monitor our CCTV and IP based systems, BB Links etc. This is a screenshot of one of the bigger machines also running virtualbox and some of the backup machines securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.
james.wilson Posted December 31, 2012 Author Posted December 31, 2012 from the linux side This shows the array and free disk space. There are 7 x 2Tb drives in this machine using a raid 6 array with hot spare. so 6 disks are in use in the array. In the event of a drive failure the system will disconnect the failed drive and use the hot (meaning its powered and connected) drive to replace the dead one and rebuild the array. A raid 6 array can survive 2 drives filaing and still not loose data and function. (raid 5 only 1) DUring a rebuild this stresses the drive so its easy for another drive to fail while the array is rebuilding. Raid 6 can handle this, raid 5 cannot. You can alos so i have 7.1Tb of space available on the array. This shows the heart of the unit. an 8 processor xeon i7 running at 3.4 GHz. It also shows the unit has 16 Gig of RAM in it. This is cos its my virtualisation machine and i like to alaocate real ram to virtual machines. ie our UDL server is in here, my remote machine for working as well as other things. securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.
GalaxyGuy Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 So, is it an i7 or a Xeon ? I thought the i7 were non ECC.
james.wilson Posted December 31, 2012 Author Posted December 31, 2012 your right its not a xeon its a desktop i7 The big machine has 2 sockets in it (the one posted is a single socket) and has twin xeons. securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.
james.wilson Posted December 31, 2012 Author Posted December 31, 2012 My main server in the data centre failed This was running xen on a 9650se (which is now dead and awaiting repair) If you remeber tsi went down a few weeks ago and i had to use backup systems to run it on. This bit of kit is all enterprise stuff, tyan mobo, seagate es2 drives (x8) on the failed card. securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.

You need a cluster I've been hit with silent data corruption in the past with non ECC and it brought down my virtualisation dev system.
james.wilson Posted December 31, 2012 Author Posted December 31, 2012 i do need a cluster. i looked into HA linux some time ago and settled on backing up often. I use affa and rsync to do this and it works well. It takes about 10 mins to restore a backup machine to be the replacement the thing that takes time is the dns IP change. I would like to lower the ttl for the dns but dont think i can with my NS provider my plan for a cluster was 2 use 4 machines 2 xen servers and 2 iscsi units then raid across each lun and use xen to handle the cluster. But the cost of xen and the fact i cant sw raid with it made me go this way. securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.
GalaxyGuy Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 If recovery time is only a few minutes and you can afford to lose a few hours of data, then I can see where you're coming from. I've had my issues with clusters too
