GalaxyGuy Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Not sure this is the right place to post this, I want to be able to generate a email from a input, someone has mentioned Rasberry Pi, I have never used it but it does seem like it may be a option, so here is the scenario that I want to achieve: Relay operates and generates signal. The trigger generates a email that is forwarded to a pre set email. Any ideas? I suppose it all depends on the requirements and if the customer will allow you to develop / debug your solution on-site. For an off-the-shelf installable solution, you can use a Galaxy G2-12 panel with low cost IP module. This can be linked to £1/month monitoring which gives the advantage of accurate panel logging, battery backed PSU, polling, Web Interface and web configurable SMS / Voice / E-mail. It would also give future expansion capability for further signal monitoring from other outputs.
Joe Harris Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 You could always stick a prebuilt turnkey linux build as a VM for test purposes - of course there are security considerations with doing so in anything but an isolated network.
matthew.brough Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 We have Vmware VSphere and all the common distros are on there so I'll have a play with a pi and ubuntu with the GUI first and see how I get on. Still feel a little uneasy about not being a Microsoft Monkey but it's time I took the plunge. www.securitywarehouse.co.uk/catalog/

You could do worse than one of these http://www.axis.com/products/cam_p8221/index.htm It will send an email on alarm but not monitored so just like a speech dialler or text dialler in effect securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.
Joe Harris Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 VSphere supports all the common distros but does not include them - the selection on there is for startup/shutdown and drive mounting compatibility. The releases are easily sourced though and as others have said go for a GUI interface to start with, it really is not that bad and I can assure you that for every single Windows feature you find lacking in various Linux builds you will find another feature that you will think 'I wish Windows had this'.
james.wilson Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 you could use virtualbox on your windows machine to save messing with your esxi server securitywarehouse Security Supplies from Security Warehouse Trade Members please contact us for your TSI vetted trade discount.
fozzies Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Also there is plenty of good Linux community support if you know where to look. Could you post some links please? i would be very interested in them
alterEGO Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Am i missing something here? Webway ip or gprs or even Dualcom and a PSU. What more do you need? Maybe a few bits depends what output the plant has. No need for a panel etc though.
sixwheeledbeast Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Could you post some links please? i would be very interested in them Useful sites/pages I have bookmarked. https://www.linuxquestions.org/ http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/ http://www.computerhope.com/unix.htm http://ubuntuforums.org/ Most big distro's have there own IRC channel on freenode. Login with mIRC, Pidgin, Irssi or whatever and ask away someone will help. https://www.freenode.net/
