Cable Repair

Hi there,

I have offered to assist an elder lady with a cable (both mains and PIR) repair that a mouse has taken a liking to. As a recent widow, she is gobsmacked to have been quoted over £2k.

I will splice some new sensor cable to the pcb and fit a junction box to the mains with anew bit to the pcb. It's no big deal!

Having installed my own alarm, I am not unfamiliar with the workings, however......! Her alarm was professional fitted over ten years ago and from my understanding, the mains cable looks wrong on two counts.

1. It is currently three core, white 'lighting' flex, not the grey twin core and earth. Is normal flex suitable and should I replace like for like?

2. The instructions for my alarm installation recommended a 3a fuse within a few feet of the pcb. I can see no evidence of any 3a fuse, not even in her garage fuse board. As I will be replacing a few feet of cable, is it best practice to fit a 3a box and run the new cable from it to the pcb rather than just a junction box?

Thanks

Rex

1, depends where it is and how its installed.

2. Yes there should be a spur adjacent to the panel. A 3A fuse is not mandatory as long as its a suitable size to protect the outgoing cable and the a lower value than the supply fuse/breaker etc

Thanks for your reply.

The pcb box is in the under stairs cupboard, not really very accessible but nothing that kneeling will not cure.

The section of cable that the mouse chewed is flex on both sides. The cable does go into a partitioned-off section under the first step, but there would be no logical reason to install an inaccessible fuse. I don't know if the panel was powered from a spur but I will check as best I can. In the worst case, I can replace like for like and she will hopefully be up and running as it was before the mouse had a meal.

From this and other post id suggest its an adt dealler install.

Where did the 2k quote come from? Sounds like someone was trying to replace the lot and have her pay all the on going charges upfront?

Yes, it was an ADT dealer install about ten years ago and they had the monitoring / maintance contract. When the neighbour's husband called them (obviously before he died) ADT told him that it would cost £2k to rewire the system. He canceled the monitoring and maintenance contract and they have not had a alarm for two years. Now she is no her own, she feels vulnerable.

I would suggest she mis-heard the cost, ask her to call ADT again for another quote 0844 800 1999
