project-

12v - 5v 50p ebay tat pcb, jumpers removed & flyleads soldiered on, tested then put in old iD biscuit box, gobbed over with hot melt glue

glue has cured opaque but electronics now kick out 12v, bugger...

Beware! I'd only recommend with an old glue gun used only for that purpose!

Otherwise I just look out for SWA kits on ebay that are near sell-by date. Got a load of 3M ones lately, £1 a pop!

They were for some obscure fibre joint, just opened up all the boxes and binned the odd y-shaped plastics.

Odd y shape plastics were for separating fibres to diff trays not that is of much use to know lol

Not all resins protect electronics there some made to conduct electricity , packet would have said normally or data sheet

I tried those said cheapo PCBs on the boat to run LED strings, all bust in the same manner you mentioned, they are just very badly designed / made I think.

So, I've decided to take my work back underground.... to stop it falling into the wrong hands

You're better with the LM2596 based DC-DC buck converter. Higher current capability and step down efficiency.  Around £1 though.

I suppose if buying from UK, then you'll pay a premium.  Output voltage is adjustable via pot.
