Another question - if I just substituted the speaker in the enclosure with a smaller one, would the sound be quieter or not!

That would just reduce the intensity of the noise, and not effect the volume much.

Your best bet is to buy yourself a few 1/4 watt resistors from maplins or RS: 250R, 500R, IK, 2K, 5K & 10K. And simply try each resistor until you find an acceptable level of volume.

All you need to do is insert the resistor inline with any lead going to the speaker terminal. Using terminal block will do.

What area are you located in..?

With regard to the keypad beeping if you disconnect the correct connection in the RKP it makes no noise and still functions correctly.
Good point, but if he disconnects the Speaker from RKP & Internal Sounder as well, this could cause problems if someone else comes in after he's set the system and they think its unset when they hear no noise walking around causing alarms. Did not notice if there was any past mention of this being monitored? Do we need to consider possible false alarms passed to Police?
You have to be careful when tampering with the equipment yourself you will void the warrantee, and in the middle of the night when all hells breaking loose that can get expensive.

Too right and also if they have fitted a Speaker with a tamper on it and he goes and opens it up, he may not be able to reset it if they have it on Eng reset for a tamper fault.

Yes - exactly - its the "diddly-dit" on unset in the morning that wakes up the kids about 1hr before they need to wake.

If the internal speaker was taken out the entry and exit tones would be inaudible, so it has to stay.

Plan A: Alarm co. coming again Monday about another problem so I'm going to really push hard and try to get them (for warranty reasons) to put the resistor into the speaker. If the activation sound isn't loud enough once the resistor is in, I'll push for a separate internal sounder.

Plan B: I've got a selection of resistors from Maplin (6 pence each!) and I'll "DIY" it. My code clears tamper faults.

Plan C: Someone like Dave! (ie a third party!)

Best if I don't say what area I live - there are not that many local alarm companies, and you'll all start guessing! One things for sure - they obviously don't read this forum :w00t:

What about going back to the old days of an exit buzzer powered from a rely board programed to exit/entry.

Where did say the rkp is outside the protected area?

In post #11

(There is an additional control pad outside the entry zone which we use to unset the system without triggering the entry tone.)

That might be on the first floor landing - out of the e/e but within the protected area.

I think your right Paul the protected area is classed as an area where you can get to by normal means ie. a door if the control equipment can be got to by smashing a window that is not a normal means of entry and is o.k. I had this argument with another installer about fitting panels in lofts without putting a detector in there with it.

A final update. The internal sounder has been muffled by the installers to keep the noise down. This actually works quite well. This was their preferred solution to the problem.

My maintenance agreement gives me free call-out for the first year, but has a "No User Tampering with Alarm" clause. I'm not stupid enough to want to invalidate my contract so I'm learning to live with the muffled sounder.

Thanks to all those who provided input. This is an excellent site, and I'll be back if I get any new problems I think you guys can help with!
