Smart Electrics Posted October 5, 2004 Posted October 5, 2004 PMR446 clarification on connection to PSTN. Ofcom have had a number of enquiries from users of PMR 446 equipment concerning the legality of connecting PMR 446 equipment to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). To clarify the present position, PMR 446 equipment can be connected to the PSTN by individual users to send private messages. However, section 4(2) of the Wireless Telegraphy (Exemption) Regulations 2003 No.74 does not provide an exemption for PMR 446 equipment to be connected to the PSTN for business purposes. In line with its policy of liberalising operating practices Ofcom proposes to consult on updating its Wireless Telegraphy Exemption Regulations shortly and in doing so will consider the applicability of whether exempt devices such as PMR 446 are appropriate to connect to the PSTN for among other things business purposes.
