PeterJames Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Came in this morning to find the server had died, I have a backup at home but because the A27 is closed travelling to and from is a bit more than a ball ache, luckily my salesman was in Brighton so picks it up for me. Gets it to the office wires it all in and with the help of JW gets it up and running, it worked a dream everything saved from the night before nothing missing. Then on to getting the internet working. I'm with Virgin for business I have a Cisco modem plugged directly into the server and the SME server does the DHCP. Anyway the modem will only talk to the mac address that it was set up with, apparently according to Virgin the only way to change this is to reset the modem and log in via their portal, the problem is they have switched the portal off as they are upgrading their systems. If I was on their latest package this would not have been a problem. I have upgraded but they have told me 28 days until its done, I cant go 28 days with no emails. So I take the old network adapter out of the old server and its PCI and all I have on the new server is PCI express. so I plug the PCI card in on a pc and hey presto I have internet. Great but I have 8 machines and two DVR's and a couple of intruder panels that need internet. I downloaded a program to make the pc a DHCP server but that didnt work. I thought about buying a PCI to usb adapter but James says that would then use the USB MAC and not the Ethernet adapter MAC. I have a mobile wifi modem but it has no Ethernet ports and only three of our machines have wifi the rest is all wired. Plus its a ball ache to keep swapping between networks to send receive emails I am sure that there will be someone on here that will have the answer Quote
Nova-Security Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 (edited) Set your mobile up as a wifi hotspot as temp measure with a access point in bridge mode that does DCHP (edimax does), upgrade to a draytek router for next time USB dongle port on the front and use routers dchp. PeterJames Posted August 28, 2015 Author Posted August 28, 2015 Thanks Rich I have an Edimax access point I shall give that a try. Though I was rather hoping someone would tell me how to get the Virgin DSL working Quote
petrolhead Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Use a router with firmware on it that allows you to do mac address spoofing on the wan port? Quote
petrolhead Posted August 28, 2015 Posted August 28, 2015 Or use a router to do the dhcp, but point the default gateway to the 2nd nic of yhe machine with the virgin nic in it, then bridge the connectons. I have done that before but cant remember the pecifics at the mo, have had a fewbeers:) Quote

breff Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 As petrolhead said, get a cable router and spoof the mac to the same as your nic Quote The opinions I express are mine and are usually correct! (Except when I'm wrong)(which I'm not)
james.wilson Posted August 29, 2015 Posted August 29, 2015 Pete I can get sme to spoof a mac address via a script. Id rather not make it permanent and have a migrated way to restore after failure, ie not using the mac address. But i can get you going monday but it will only work till rebooted.
