So.....what's the story with Y3K?

Hi,

I'm a newcomer to this forum and previously asked for opinions about what sort of system to install for my domestic premises..............I indicated I was leaning towards a system supplied by Y3K.

The general consensus seemed to be that I should avoid them at all costs. I posted back asking what the problem with them was - at which point, the forum database appears to have died a horrible death and the thread has disappeared into a black hole.

So...........are their products Mickey Mouse or is their customer service dire?

Or both?

Any answers gratefully received........email me at simon.ashdown@webtribe.net if you're unwilling to share via the board.

Many thanks for your time.

So that's the 'once it's left their premises' bit covered.

Now, the 'getting it out of their premises' bit. I placed one order with them, it turned up 9 days after I ordered it for next day and I couldn't get anyone to admit there was any problem with that, let alone get a refund for the delivery.

I assume you had a rough ride with them then? Not good.

The kit I was looking to buy from them consists of:

4 x SONY COLOUR DAY/NIGHT 480TVL IR BULLET CAMERA, 6MM

XVISION 100FPS, 4 CAMERA, 4 AUDIO PC DVR CARD AND SOFTWARE

4 x 20 METRE DIY PLUG & PLAY CABLE

4 CAMERA PLUG & PLAY POWER SUPPLY UNIT

Of this, I reckon the cables and power supply unit are probably generic and fairly reliable. The Sony cameras are, according to Y3K, "the UK's best selling Colour IR Day/Night cameras" which means they can't be all bad.

Which leaves the PC DVR card and software (which costs £249+VAT on it's own) - presumably this would be the problem area?

Or am I just being totally naive and suckered in by the sales pitch?

Thanks for reading.

They are Sony chipped and not made by Sony at all.

I'll be honest, that's what swung the deal for me. I thought I'd go for the Sony cameras only to receive some generic cameras that I could have got from the Sunday market.

The xvision cards are a bit pants!

You would be better off going for a geovision 650 or 800

Oh and those cameras are PANTS!!

You would be wise ot spend a few extra ££££' s on the cameras?

What are the cameras for?

Regards.

A cctv company selling plug and WHAT!!!

What it probably means is you get 4 cables with a pstn plug on the end that plugs into an adapter that plugs into the power supply that needs a plug socket at least 2 feet away that also plugs into it...... Ahh I see what they mean now, plug and play, you spend most of the installation time plugging stuff in and playing with it for hours wondering why you can see all images ghosting on all cameras.

Not what we in the TRADE call a CCTV system, Maybe there should be a new thread opened for DIY CCTV for the companies like Y£K

A CCTV system should consist of a screened cable for the video, preferably RG59. And going on previous experience the cable they supply is not suitable at all. Something you would rather know about before spending a day hiding it and making it look pretty.

I Agree with the plug and play bit!!

But if you want some high res IR cameras with decent 50m cables (video and power) attached I can get hold of some for you.

Regards.

Thanks for the feedback guys, seems like you've saved me some hassle by pointing out Y3K's shortcomings.

The cameras are simply for domestic property protection. One's going to be inside the garage monitoring that (the garage got ram-raided last week and it's made me take a long hard look at home security).

The second camera's going to be in the kitchen/dining room pointing straight at our patio doors/french windows so that it can see the entire 90ft back garden as well.

The third camera's going to be in the lounge monitoring that as well as the front path and I haven't decided what to do with the fourth - my car is garaged so I don't need to monitor the street and in any case I can't be arsed jumping through Data Protection Act hoops (a guy a couple of streets away had a camera monitoring his car parked in the road and he had endless visits from the Police telling him he was breaking the law by filming passers-by without their consent or notifying them).

So...........I don't need anything too flashy but what I do need is something that will do the job!

Thanks again for your input, I'm learning rapidly.

Fascinating reading, and the reason why Security Instore was started. Give me a ring, 0870 950 1114, as I have some interesting comments on Y3k that I cannot put on the forum for some very good reasons. I can also help you out with you cameras etc.
