Specialist Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 (edited) Take a look at the Ideal or Test-um ranges, both excellent value for money. Think Test-um is under the JDSU brand now, a few used Ideal sets on eBay at the moment for very little money. I bought an Ideal abs set today as a Toolbag set for £15 brand new. As James said, there are cheaper sets about. They actually Start about £10 for a Chinese made set. Edited June 2, 2019 by Specialist Quote Customers Love us, Intruders Hate us.

Specialist Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 Yes mate, at the price I couldn't say no. You know yourself they're not something we use every day, but can be very useful. The test-um is too expensive to be knocking about in the bag day in & day out, so if you pardon the pun: the Ideal will be, well ideal & also apparently functions like a sort of mini butt set. As a house basher I use it often , even the odd commercial job that I don't bother labelling I need it lol 1 Quote
Specialist Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 (edited) What, you mean when those lovely plasterers chop your cables ? Or decide it'll be great fun to move them from where you put them ?. On one big site we were doing, they had overnight security to stop theft etc. But our cables & the sparks cables were still getting chopped, so we rigged up 2 cameras in one block that had just been 1st fixed. Caught the bloody security guard Red handed chopping cables. I don't use mine that often, cos I'm a good boy & always label my cables . Nah I just lazy on labelling , first fix hardly ever label , I see some IT guys doing there second fix , swearing about the first fix with nothing labelled ,but none of them carry the probe they don't even know how to buzz them out ,although if you have 100cat5 and looking for only one it will take them some time without a tone tester Quote
Specialist Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Yeah I can't say I'd want to go back to the old days of belling cables out, especially on large installs. Too much like hard work . Most of the time I'm pretty good at marking up cables on 1st fix, but when your rushing to do a site things get missed. That's when the tracer is a godsend . sixwheeledbeast Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 Some installs need labelling especially if you have a lot or it isn't you coming back. I would argue some installs are not worth labelling. For example if domestic I would often wait until all the devices are up and flash them on the battery while wiring up so they can then be labelled in the finished controls. Sometimes old skool is still the best. Quote
