CCTV and an alarm

Hi everyone, I apologise for my sheer ignorance however I would appreciate any help that you can give. I would like to install a budget PIR system and whilst it would be nice to have it interupt the t.v etc what I really need is a warning buzzer to wake me up at nite so I can see who is sneaking around in my unfinished extension. Can I buy such a system? or can an existing budget camera by easily adapted to do this? My apologies once again for what i am sure is a really dumb question however my need is kind of urgent lol

What exactly do you want to do, a camera is only any good if you are recording it. Do you just want a alarm to sound if theres movement outside your extension? And do you only want it going to your bedroom?

For example you have a PIR connected to a small 12 volt buzzer connected to your headboard :)

Not sure what type of PIR would be best suited outside but someone here will.

Thanks for reply, I have considered PIR however have in past had a number of false alarms. As extension is open to the elements I can only believe this would increase chance of falsies, which is why I need to see cause of alarm hence camera. Then I can act appropriately. Already had 1 theft and PIR has triggered twice since installed 3 days ago. By the time I have reacted no sight or sound of anyone!!! Not sure if these false alarms or whether I have an ongoing problem Therefore I want an alarm that will alert me and not the intruder if I have one!!

Im a bit confused to what you are calling a PIR.

A PIR is a unit that detects intruders, A camera will allow you to see the area you desire from a monitor connected to the other end of the cable. A buzzer can be connected to the pir and a power supply to alert you when the PIR registers.

And as much as this kills me to say it, your best bet is a trip to B&Q. For about £100 you get a camera with pir and buzzer. As long as you have a scart socket on your tv or vcr then the pir will change the channel for you when the pir triggers, just like when you turn on your dvd player or whatever thats connected via scart, it automatically swithes the tv over.

Failing that get a local engineer to do something for you, either alarm or cctv.

Rich thanks for your patience. I have installed a PIR activated alarm in the extension, when triggered this gives an audible alarm. Unfortunately this has triggered twice in last 3 days- no intruder. I am looking at installing a PIR activated camera. This way I won't have to keep running around my garden naked whenever the wind blows too strong or whatever. I suspect that any intruder will be during night therefore I need a loud audible alert(although preferably not so loud that it would alert intruder so no external) It would be nice to have a camera so I can see what or who (ie how BIG) the intruder is so I dont end up making a fool of myself. I expect that extension security will be an issue for next 4-5 weeks. So i don't want to go mad cost wise although as our plot is fairly exposed it might make sense to buy something that could be used to provide overall survelliance once extension is complete.

Hi nonothing.

Your problem is similar to a question I asked a few weeks ago. I wanted to monitor a (not very visible) side gate to my back garden that looked like people were trying to open - the latch had been raised, but it was bolted from behind so was secure.

I was looking at CCTV etc. just like you.

In the end I just put up a PIR-switched light set to come on day or night. It sends the "you have been spotted message" to an intruder. Since then it's not been touched! :D

Yeah I know what you mean, problem is I have a £1000 boiler sat in an unfinished extension and although a PIR flood might work I feel I need to be more certain.Don't ask why i have a brand new boiler in an unfinished extension it's a very long and unbelievably complicated story. suffice to say it was not my original plan!!!! BTW it,s actually working not just in there for storage.

Take a look at screwfix product 52274.

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.js...=33802&id=52274

Same thing used to be available from Y3K (covered elsewhere) for less.

I trialled this and found it to work well.

Price includes a camera and a monitor.

PIR detects, and causes ding-dong at monitor.

Link from camera to monitor is wireless.

I have tried it to monitor my car outdoors - 30m up garden, with monitor inside house.

And also, as a baby monitor.

Both camera and monitor can be battery powered. I had one customer who was very pleased with results from monitoring their horse in a trailer whilst being towed behind their car.

Camera also has a microphone, so you can hear what's going on in the vicinity of the camera.

Camera also has IR LEDs, so you can see in the dark (short distance only).

Anyway, remarkable value for so many tricks, and you get camera and monitor.

I seem to recall that you can connect a VCR, probably phono connection.

Probably wouldn't last forever outdoors.

You can get more / replacement cameras.

I think the monitor will sequence through up to four cameras.

That's the unit I can supply and we have been discussing, nonothing. It really is a cracking bit of kit!

Manufacturers blurb and prices (note, I can supply it for £129 plus vat):

CMS244 Wireless Camera Monitor System .....£144.63 + VAT

This new monitor system comes complete with 5" B&W monitor, and wireless B&W camera with inbuilt PIR motion sensor. The camera transmits the video and audio signal to the receiver over a 2.4GHz radio frequency. Monitor and Camera unit can run on battery power. Up to 3 cameras can be connected to each monitor system.
