Hi I am currently in the process of updating my electrical qualifications to BS7671 having been away from the trade for a good few years I expect to be made redundant in the near future and have decided to go self employed as an Electrician.

During my time in the trade I did alarm installations on domestic builds and most customers were happy with a stand alone system.

When I get my business up and running I would like to be able to install the Alarm System along with the Electrics either stand alone or monitored if the customer requests it. I have no intention of doing " cheap systems" and intend to use good gear but what will I need to do to be allowed to have a system kooked up for monitoring.

Do I need to take any courses or is the C&G 2381 ok.

Will I have to join any trade body.

Could I install the sysems and hand over to another company to maintain as I only want the option of installing alarms if a customer wants one I don't want to go out and advertise for alarm work, ( just have the option available to help me get my business built up). Is what I am suggesting available ??

Thanks in advance for any advise

You wont need anything to get a system monitored, but if you want Police response you will need to be either SSIAB or Nacoss approved.

Thanks for the reply, Whats the differance then between "monitored" and "response" as I was under the impression a monitored system gave you a police response.

What would I need for approval from either of the two bodies you have mentioned and is it expensive to join, as its approx £500 per annum to be in the NIC for sparks

And if I did't join could I install and pass over to a Nacoss firm and then they would get the ongoing maintaince contract or is this not possible
