Vehicle Security

Well, for the second time this year I had my car broken into last night. This time though its wasnt kids trying to steal the radio (like it was last time) but they actually tried to steal the car. They smashed the steering lock mechenism and ripped out the ignition system. They also managed to break into the car without causing a great deal of damage, obviously used to specialist tools. Needless to say they didnt manage to get away with it because the immobiliser mechanism built into the engine management system stopped them, but the damage will run into a few hundred quid. So needless to say, I require advice on vehicle security, as I have no idea what so ever as to how cars work (apart from you put petrol in when the yellow light comes on).

So can anyone give me advice on how to stop the b******* from doing this a third time. Or should I just sell my beloved love machine, ermm I mean car and buy a sherman tank.

Dale,

Like everything it comes down to how much do you want to spend.

Obviously not pros as they would have sussed that your car had an immobiliser - unless your car had this fitted at a later date.

Most security stuff can be bypassed quickly. Anything attached to a steering wheel is useless - the steering wheel can be cut through in seconds rendering any item attached to the wheel as useless. There are devices that cover the entire wheel but they are massive.

CCTV covering your vehicle is fine up to a point, but like a tracker device they are purely reactive and so do not prevent break-ins.

From memory the only items that seem any good are the window films you can put on which do not allow your window glass to shatter, or the mechanical devices which lock your vehicle in a gear - and I'm not talking about the autolock things which can be removed in seconds.

You don't state which car you own, or the entry method.

Personally I'd go for a wheelclamp, pretty cheap bloody obvious to a thief and coupled with a decent alarm system should do the job. Make sure the alarm system is not advertised by stickers on the windows as thieves will know which alarm system to bypass.

I've known one guy who taped razorblades underneath his drivers door handle at night......can't really recommend that method though!

Sorry to hear of this, can you put your car into a lock up overnight?

Out of sight - out of mind.

I own a Vauxhall Corsa, according to North Yorkshire Police, they broke into the vehicle by bending the door frame and lifting the catch, apparently this is a well known and used method. Also to add insult to injury, the local police bobby informed me that a "gang" is working in our area, and seven vehicles were either stolen or attempted to be stolen the same evening as mine.

I wouldnt have minded, but my car was parked outside my flat on York Uni campus, opposite the 24hr manned security centre, and they didnt see a thing!

Anyway, im having a Toad C2 fitted on Friday, and the car has been repaired to a working state, but the body work needs doing.

Seems we are no longer able to own nice new cars!

Why not add some sirens to the inside and a smokecloak?

The noise in a confind space will make it harder for them.

Might not put them off but will make the alarm stand-out from all the others going off around?

This isn't appropriate for everybody but I have a wire free panel installed at home (a Scantronic 500r+). I have a spare sensor that I keep in the glove box of my car. When the car is parked up on the drive or in the garage I get the sensor out of the glove box and rest it on the dash board (with a bit of blue tac to help it stay). If my car is broken into my whole house alarm goes off.

This actually happened to me once and the thief  ran off as soon as the siren on the house started blaring.

Its a bit reactive rather than preventative but at least I just get away with a broken door lock rather than having no car at all.

Helen

By the way if anyones wondering the sensors can work up to 50m away from the panel (more if there's not too much in the way)

I used to do the same thing Helen, I used a Visonic receiver attached to my control panel and a wireless passive hanging from the car mirror, this alone was my part 2 setting option. Worked a treat, the Nova 4Q soon put the wind up would be theives.

Why not instal smoke  security. We are able to provide compact smoke generators that work off the car battery to provide sufficient smoke in the car to detter any theft. It does not stop the break in but it stop the loss of the car and contents. They are about £500 installed.

Interested let me know
