i was just wondering to what level everyone on this forumn is qualified? because for those that are just security installers there is not a great deal of qualifications out there to achieve,

heres a list of my qualifications

c&g 2360 part 1 and part 2 electrical installation

c&g "C" certificate electrical installation

NVQ Level 2 and 3 electrical installation

AM1 electrical competences

AM2 electrical competences

c&g 1851 security systems

c&g 2391 electrical inspection and testing

c&g 16th edition iee course

c&g 2400 electrical design and verification

HND electrical engineering

and also lots of training courses on various manufacturers kit and an IPAF card for powered access equipment.

i have managed to get quite a few certificates over the years

These would get you an interveiw, alas if you cant do the job you'd be down the road.

well apart from going thro an electrical apprenticeship 22 - 26 years ago and passing electrical qualifications at the time i have absulutely no bits of paper to prove that i can do my job - just 22 years of experience.

wait tho ........... i do have the IPAF and how to make a scaffold and the health and safety card, so i must know how to do something.

Luckily for me my current employers did,nt want pieces of paper - they just wanted a competent person who could do his job (they could,nt find him so employed me!! )

seriously tho i heard rumours a while back that there eas moves afoot to give everyone the chance to get properly certified etc , any body know more details.

Ive noticed this in four places Ive worked now, and every time the old-timers always relate stories of the manager being a hopeless technician 'back in the day'

lets face it most of them old-timers where probably just jealous that it is not them getting promoted, and i agree practical experiance counts for a lot but it is useless without some technical knowledge so it is just a matter of finding a fine balance of the two.

experience wise i left school at 16 and become an apprentice electrician worked mostly on commercial industrial sites as both electrician and foreman, then become a marine electrician and worked at lairds for about 3 years also spent a couple of years doing plc panel wiring and commisioning, worked as a tv production electrician for 12 months at mersey tv (brookside) but spent most time in contracting then decide to specialise in electrical inspection and testing and become nic eic qualifying manager at my company before joining //.National Installer.// as a fire install engineer and then as a projects engineer ( first person two pass the minerva training course withh 100% pass rate) after a short while got promoted to field line manager of fire, but then got fed up being a corparate slave and decided if im going to put up with the stress then i want the financial rewards and so formed my own company along with my brother (who has even more qualifications than me) so all in all i have about 24 years experiance behind me and also a few qualifications to show that i know what im doing from a technical aspect.

Yep. In our trade, it's 98% initiative and 2% down the cafe.

10 years in the trade with my first qualification being the 16th edition unswitched fused spur installation with Pete Moss from Leeds College. A half day in the presence of the legendary David Grant down the ACT 'community centre' in Rainford is invaluable for false alarm prevention and cure.

Besides that, and with the exception of the 'Approved (FIT MANUFACTURER HERE) Installer' certificates I've gathered over the years, it's all been virtually pure experience and hands on.

Anyone worth their salt in this trade will not sleep properly if he thinks he may have not carried out his tasks to the full. Luckily for me, my experience means I sleep quite comfortably each and every night.
