Starting up...

If you're starting up from nothing (i.e. no installations), how do you go about tendering for work if you don't have NSI approval (for example) or any form of BS approval?

Surely, you are forced to accept non-approved jobs until you are in such a position to get approved (i.e. have a number of installations under your belt for the approval bodies to assess you)?

Won't most people want their installations to meet/surpass their insurers pre-requisites?

How do you get to a level where by you can install monitored/communicating systems?

Do you have to gain any form of BT approval to install RedCARE systems.

What would a monitoring station (ARC) expect from you in terms of approval/accreditation before they allow you to set up accounts with them?

How far do you have to take the limited company/Company House stuff if you're trying to set up a one man band alarm company?

Advertising is the best bet i would say, tendering is something different altogether as you will be unlikly to get onto a tendering list without some background as a company. Depending on where your looking to tender though will depend on wether or not the brown envelope is useable or not as its not what you know but who and how much sometimes!

Most homeowner dont know what that is and many insurance compnies dont bother now!

Correct! Always been the way and no doubt always will be.

If you or your client will pay the bill the CS will happily accept your connections, its only the police response you wont be able to get. That will depend on the local police force rules!

Solvency will do im sure!

You can set up and run for as long as you wish as a sole trader, its probably in your best interests tho to be limited asap for financial reasons, but its not essential.

Same as electrical (aside from Part P :realmad: ) - anyone can work to the BS standards, there is no such thing as BS 'approval', only compliance. It just helps to actually know what you are doing though!

I am working towards SSAIB and so do all my installations to PD6662 : 2004 (which is in itself not a standard, just a list of old and new BS / EN ones and an interpretation guideline). Join BSI for £100 and get 50% off all the standards, or you could photocopy them for now but you'll need to show real ones for approval anyway.

Do all the installations and paperwork as if you wre approved from the start and it should be no hastle. (Thats what they told me anyway... )

Stu.

So, I've decided to take my work back underground.... to stop it falling into the wrong hands

What exactly do you mean when you say "working towards"?

Are you allowed to use SSAIB logos and what not within your advertising, stationery, etc?

What BS Standards do I need and how much is 50% off (50% off £300 is still an £150 spend in my book)?

No, not unless you're SSAIB registered. You do all the paperwork, logs, records etc... to the standards required for the SSAIB so when you do gain approval they can see you know what you're doing.

My advise if you sub-contract is to put every communications regarding the job you are doing for the company on paper that way you will not be hung when it comes to payment. I learnt the hard way
