Guest davetuckuk Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 Hi all, Been using the site to get some advice before I hand over my cash. Ive got a quote for £400+ vat from a guy for : 5 visonic discovery quad PIRS a magnetic contact on front door texecom veritas R8 control panel Texecom odyssey bell unit. firstly does that sound like the right money? secondly has he gone a bit mad with pirs (since i only have a smallish new build 3bed house) - he plans to put one in the kitchen, one in the dining room one in the lounge and one in the hall (every room downstairs except the loo!). Ive got no problem with this if it makes the system better. thirdly should i have a magnetic contact on the back door (or is this not an issue since he has a PIR aimed at it). what about loft hatches does anyone bother putting a contact on them anymore? Fair play to the guy he has made the estimate from a layout plan cos he wont visit me in the eve. only reason why i ask is i have had another estimate but when i rang the guy he just shouted a figure (£345 + vat) at me without asking any details of the house. when i asked more he said 3xpirs its the basic kit (dont panic he is coming round to do a full survey first so will probably change his mind) lastly do any of you guys work the leighton buzzard (nr luton) area who may want to quote?
Guest Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 Hi dave, welcome to the forum. I cant comment on the price as areas seem to vary greatly. My advice would be to get at least three proper quotes and let them spec the property. Someone on here near you may offer to come and give you a price. If your planning on sticking around could you view the forum Rules section and also Say hi in the introduce yourself forum. , Dave.

I dont think there is a right and wrong when it comes to loft hatches, but its all down to cost, if the customer is willing to pay for it and I think it needs one then no problems..... Guest Bell-man Posted May 17, 2005 Posted May 17, 2005 A PIR in each ground floor room and one on the landing is usually spot on. The contact on the door is not so much an "intruder detection" device as an "authorised entry" device. When you open the door to come in, the timer starts and you have free movement in from of specified detectors (i.e. the hall PIR) to allow you to turn off the system. If you came through the glass in your door then the hall detector will cause an alarm straight away. Therefore, unless you want to use the kitchen door as your entry point there's no need to put a contact on it. The idea of putting a contact on the loft hatch is generally over the top although there are homes where the roof is the most vulnerable point i.e. London town houses where you can walk all along the rooftops. There are many ways for the installer to cut his costs and the prices quoted may not reflect the standard of work or quality of kit used. Try and get a reccomendation from a neighbour who has an alarm (and see the advice in the pages on this site).
