New to Alarm Systems

Bit of advice please!

Recently bought a house with an old (10+yrs) alarm system installed. Sensors (x3) and bell boxes (x2) seem to be in working order but the keypad and panel are on the blink and since I have no instructions I do not know how to reset.

I've had one engineer look at the system and he was of the opinion that the best solution would be to replace the keypad and panel.

Does this seem to be the best solution or is there a way to salvage the original equipment?

Assuming that I do replace those units, but retain the other circuitry and components what sort of cost should I be looking at?

I'll obviously get a few quotes but being new to alarm systems I have no idea what is sensible in terms of solution or cost!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm guessing therefore that I will need to pay for the keypad and panel plus X hours labour to install.

£200 sound reasonable or should I get it for less? I'm not sure exactly what proportion of the system is in effect being replaced.

Sounds too cheap to me...

By about £100.00. ex VAT of course!

I am assuming that this won't be a monitored system? Will it be maintained at all? If the system in general is that old, depending on the brand of detectors, you might be better off replacing all components.

If you take up a maintenance contract and don't replace the lot, then if you call out your alarm company due to false alarms or problems with old equipment then you will be charged.

What brand is the existing panel?
