I would have thought the manufacturers of the equipment would probably have some sort of training scheme

thats what i said, as the likes of thatcham and nokia do courses i believe, i think he more ment what qualifications he would need to get a job, he knows what he is doing as he does his own and for friends etc

Again speaking hyperthetically, i would probably say most companies wouldnt be really that interested in formal qualifications, more experience would be favourable, as most qualifications tend to lag woefully behind the march of technology. Im sure a few manufacturer training course certs would hold more standing.

some electronics qualification would probably be a good idea, no? Don't want cars turning into a fire ball when the SatNav tells you to do do a U-turn.

Try the old fashioned method, sit down with a yellow pages and make a list of all companies doing what your mate wants to do then make a single page leter of introduction giving basic education and experience information put a 2" x2" photo at the top(not one that makes him look like a nerd!)copy and pasted in word gives a good impression for PC skills and ask if there are any opportunities for employment while also training! it worked for a friends son who is now installing town centre cctv, It only takes a little stamp money and a bit of time and effort and if nothing comes of it at least you are being pro-active and even that is experience , good luck to the guy! Paul.
