Guest ma701ss Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 Hello, We have a small waist high wooden gate that leads directly on to a public footpath. This is the only way to access the house, as we don't have a front garden - you just go through the gate and the front door is at the back of the house. We want to stop local kids coming in at night, so thought we would fit a high metal gate. We would like to have it locked all the time some how, even when we are out, but the postman won't be able to get in. So, we thought we could have it locked just when we are out or in bed. It would be good to use something like a key fob to open the gate, or a card, with an automatically opening lock. Any suggestions on this? Thanks
ian.cant Posted September 11, 2005 Posted September 11, 2005 Without doubt the only way to go is to get a proffessional to have a look at the situation. There many types of locks available but maybe only one type will serve the purpose here, its impossible to say without seeing the situation.
Ken G Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 Why not use a keypad lock and tell postie the code? Maybe not the cheapest solution, but it works. Type 'push button lock' into google and see what you get.
amateurandy Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 Hmmmm... if you were a postie how many lock codes would you want to remember? Round our way people just build a postbox/letterbox into the wall/fence by the gate.
Mick Posted September 27, 2005 Posted September 27, 2005 I have seen a few ways of tackling this problem As mentioned above, the post popular is no fit a mailbox adjacent to the gate. Some properties have a set of automated vehicle driveway gates and a pedestrian gate set next it. The pedestrian gate is then often secured using a viro lock which is operated by a tradesman's button run through a timeswitch so it only works between predetermined times. A codelock keypad is also usually provided to allow acces out of hours. A timeswitch can be used to open the main vehicle gates in the morning and close tham at night. Ensure system is properly protected by photocells for safety. An intercom system which connects into the public telephone system is the most expensive option. These allow someone attempting to make a delivery to use a communication panel to contact you on preprogammed numbers. This can include mobiles, you then decide whether to allow the caller access, and the gates can be opened by pressing a button on your phone.
