Always found Toshiba to be sturdy and reliable, had problems with sony's in the past, 2 failed on me

Sonys dont have serial ports either, well certainly not the new ones

A lot of laptops don't, it's seen as old and useless technology superseded by the buggy and flaky USB.

Another place that I know someone has had good service from recently after a Samsug laptop purchase is laptopshop.co.uk, or laptopshopdirect.co.uk, or somehting like that......

We bought a Toshiba L10 from laptopsdirect.co.uk a couple of weeks ago. Very good service and price and also got a free Vodaphone data card on Pay as you use with it. If you need to upload/download to some of the older panels you may need to dualboot and have Win98 on it. I use a Compaq N610c for that, but my main laptop is a Dell. Not had any problems with any of them.

Just to add a bit, when progamming a fire panel i did try to use my Dell which is a couple of years old running on xp but it created problems with the panel showing comms errors switched to using an old toshiba laptop which runs windows 95 it worked a treat. later spoke to a mate who works in IT who told me that windows 95/98 are far more stable than xp which can on occasion create comms problems.
