Rich Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 Hi Ray, This link http://www.sentechamerica.com/calculator.htm has a lens calculator you can use to help decide what lens you will need, chose the ccd format of the camera you have been looking at, and put in the details from where you will position the camera to what you want to see. For the IR lamp, it will depend on how powerfull the lamps are, a camera with built in IR lighting will unlikely be too strong but what matters is the reflective light coming from the object you will be monitoring. IR lamps come in different wavelengths from 730nm to 950 nm, 730 nm will look like a red lamp, 830nm will be a dull red glow and 950nm would not be visible to the human eye. The higher the wavelength the more sensitive the camera will need to be and the lens will also need to allow sufficient light to pass also. If you are using IR lighting then you will have to use a day night camera or a monochrome camera as colour cameras have IR filters which stops the IR distorting the colour. More confused yet?
tubularowl Posted January 25, 2006 Author Posted January 25, 2006 Thanks for your advice so far, it is very much appreciated. More questions I'm afraid. If I got an ordinary C mount camara like this http://www.digitalvideos.co.uk/default.asp...oduct&txtId=848 and added a 12mm or varifocal lens to it how does the lens actually attach? Can you also suggest a site that sells IR spotlamps Thanks
Rich Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 That camera would be no good with with an IR Lamp and also its a CS mount camera, forget about C and CS until you are looking for a lens for whatever type of camera you chosen. Remember for IR lighting you need a day/night camera, which is a camera that switches from colour during the day to monochrome in darkness, or just a monochrome camera. All lenses screw on, but what you will need to check is for an auto iris lens that has the right connection for the camera. IR Lamps, not got a site off hand, but here is a link to a couple of lamps from that site you are loooking at http://www.digitalvideos.co.uk/default.asp...Id1=IR+Lighting
Guest rickm Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Just a small point you should also make sure that the camera you choose can operate an AI or DC lens depending which you choose. Some of the cheaper cameras do not operate an AI only a DC one. almost all cameras now use the 4 pin square plug we used to call a panasonic plug
tubularowl Posted February 1, 2006 Author Posted February 1, 2006 Does anyone have any opinions on this camara and lens for my needs? http://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/cctv-camera.htm Camera - Sony 45CSR-12 http://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/lens-cctv.htm Lens - 5-50DC lens I've not decided on a light source yet

How does it all work? I am clueless about the lens. For a day/night is that a good choice? What is the range of that lens? Are you able to control than lens with your DVR? Sorry for the dumb questions. , Mike

No color change at day. Combined with True DN technology, it offers a perfect Day and Night solution. Just make sure you check with them before you order it, and you would be better off finding a light that you want to use so that you can give them the specs of that to be completely sure they will work together.

Sorry for the dumb questions. , Mike I think the lens is a zoom lens. My aim is to get an image on screen measuring around 10ft x 8ft at 70ft distance. To do this I seem to need a lens of about 40mm. The day/night camara looks ok but to view at night there must be an additional IR light source capable of delivering the required light at that distance. I'm not really sure about controlling the lens. I want it fixed anyway once I've got the picture I want. The software and DVR card I use can control zoom, tilt etc... but as I said I want it fixed.
