Help! Ademco 330R won't go off!

Help...going nutty.

We moved into this house this week. The owner is dead. It was built in the 1980's and the alarm box says 1977. The alarm box is the Ademco 330-R.

Its a two zone system and both were inactive.

Everything was fine and then the kid hit one of the buttons in the house and alarm went off.

After 5 minutes of panicking, I went to the box and press reset, the alarm went off. Whoa good. However, now we can't open our sliders without the alarm going off. I think one of the zones is armed. The box has the following switch:

(1) RESET

(2) a three way toggle (1 and 2 on, 1 off, 2 off)

(3) A red push in knob saying red light reset

If I toggle it to "1 off" it goes off when the sliders are opened. If I toggle it to "2 off" the front door can't be opened. So aparently now one of the zones is activated. Both were off so I know this can be reset but the owner is dead so can't ask him!

How do I disable both zones again?

THANKS!!!!! Hope someone can help, moving into a new house is stressful enough. Jennifer

  • 11 years later...

Hey, just over 12 years later. I have pretty much the same question and problem as this original poster that posted 12 years ago.

I live in a old house and have a Ademco 330r in the upstairs closest in a hall wall. The house has a basement, first floor and second floor. The main control panel is in the closet on the 2nd floor in the hall way. I don't see a plug anywhere. I just want to totally unplug this thing, so to speak. Looks like it has a batter connected to the main control panel. I found the old instruction guide online here:  http://www.butlerdurrellsecurity.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Ademco-330R-332R-342R-Introduction.pdf

It says there are 2 power sources?  The battery and another that is plugged in somewhere? usually the basement?  I also found this video with a different updated system but it pretty similar to mine even though mine is prob 20 years older if anyone wants to get an idea http://www.protection1.com/home-security-systems/support/technical/how-to/ademco/turn-off/

Should I not touch the battery? Can I get shocked? Should I like try to shut off the main power to the house from the fuse panel or something before even messing with this thing? I have a feeling the battery will still stay on if i do. Should I just call a electricion?  Thanks in advance guys, I just want this thing off :)

OP, you are absolutely right to question that video - however this is a UK forum and I'm guessing you're in the USA.

I believe that in your part of the world, alarms are wired via an external transformer, making it a little safer than over

here, however, this may very well not be the case for much older alarms.

We always advise a security professional or if you just want it removed, at least a qualified electrician.

Just for others, for clarity, yes, this is the installer showing you how to disable by opening the case etc...

Yeah I actually noticed this was a UK forum, and I apologize to bump a thread 12 years old.

I was just searching for info on this system and besides those 2 links I posted (The instruction booklet, and that video for a different, similar system) This thread popped up. I clicked on it and looks like someone had the same problem as me 12 years ago, so decided it wouldn't hurt to make a post about it.

Yeah I don't really want it removed I guess, I just am trying to find a way to turn it off. I mean it is sort of a waste of power isn't it? The whole control panel looks like it's going to explode haha. All these red lights are on, I just want the thing shut off.  Also it is connected to this old battery. I am afraid that something could go wrong with that. I mean it's already more then 20+ years old. I looked in the basement and can't find the main power where it is plugged in. Well either way thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

Again, you're right that a very old panel could easily cause a fire, when a system hasn't been serviced and/or

the battery is faulty, this can cause the charger to overheat. I have seen many older alarms, especially those

with plastic boxes, on the virge of meltdown when we've been called out for other reasons (usually when someone

has just moved in to a house).

So sorry I can't give you more specific advice as it's not a model we ever had over here AFAIK.
