XM6 fault

My neighbour's Optima XM6 went off yesterday after a momentary power cut and then it wouldn't turn off. After I volunteered to have a look at it, I found out how to fix the locked-up panel from this excellent forum - switched off, fitted new battery, reset... Thanks guys! However, now that the control panel is working fine again, the bell box no longer works - and it certainly did yesterday, at full volume!

I have checked the supply to the bell box (12V) and the trigger signal works (12V dropping to 0V on trigger). The voltage across the 2 wires supplying the speaker itself seems to be only about 3.5V. I don't have any information on what the supply voltage to the speaker should be. The speaker is ringing very faintly when the alarm is triggered - I can just hear it with my head up close.

Is the PCB shot or is it the speaker?

Does anyone know what might have caused this since it was ringing nice and loudly yesterday?

It could be a fuse that is blown on the pcb.

Best thing to do is check these first. Also if there is any movement sensors check these to see if the red led lights up when you walk past it

With regards to your comment that the sounder worked ok yesterday. You should understand that this sounder can be activated in 2 ways. One the unit has an independant power supply with a rechargeable battery. If you disconnect the mains and battery then this unit will activate.Hence why the man in the street cannot understand why the sounder activates when their is no power present.

This was the problem you had yesterday. Second the sounder can be activated

via a switched negitive on connection B (trigger -v).

Me thinks you have a popped fuse also you never said if the system was in constant use. If it was then you may have popped the fuse by accident. If not then

in the past their could have been a fault on the pcb in the sounder or someone cut a cable within the premises.

If you do remove the fuse to test it the sounder may activate. If the fuse is gone then you can purchase a replacement at Maplin (buy 2) and if you still have problems give a alarm engineer a phone.

Thanks for your reply.

The movement sensors work: they light up when I walk past them and they cause the internal alarm to sound on the control panel. They also trigger the external bell box to sound very faintly!

The system has been in constant use and I know that it worked because it has been accidentally triggered a couple of times recently.

The battery in the bell box appears to have been disconnected at some time in the past, so it wasn't connected when the sounder was working. The only supply to the bell box is coming from the control panel. I checked the fuses in the control panel and they were OK. The bell box is getting 12V and the trigger signal is working. I couldn't see any fuses in the bell box...

The sounder is getting about 3.5V across its supply wires when it is triggered, which is causing it to sound very faintly. Is this supply too low or could the sounder itself have packed up?

It sounds like you have the chime function on ?

Check control panel if you have the red power light on then it may be on chime.

press chime/mem then 0 then reset the red led (power on) and green led should be on.

The problem with your outside sounder giving a blip could be that these panels pulse the strobe output when in chime mode. This should not affect the sounder but it can be a problem if it has been wired incorrectly on the SAB module located in the external box has a fault or the panel could be faulty. Either way try the chime reset ans if that does not work you may have to crash the panel.

He mentions in his first mail that he is getting 3.5v across the speaker.

It may be that his terminology is a bit off with regards to sounder/speaker

Sorry about my terminology! The speaker I was referring to is the one in the external bell box. It is an electromagnetic speaker, with a big magnet on the back. I take it the correct name is sounder.

I think it must have failed too, since the inputs to it are as they should be. I don't know what caused it to fail, but perhaps it didn't like ringing for so long when it was triggered, or perhaps it didn't like having the power disconnected to stop it when the control panel locked up.

Anyway, if a new bell box is only £30, that sounds like the best course of action. Can anyone recommend a suitable bell box that will work with an Optima XM6? Will any box work?

Thanks very much for your help.

Any box will work we use the Multibox and sofar so good.(They come with an idiot s guide as well)

I guessed he was talking about the speaker in the sounder like the old Nova Guard type of thing.

I'll pass that recommendation on to my neighbour.

Thanks very much, both of you. Your help is greatly appreciated.
