i was doing an intruder service the other day and another co(i wont name them) were there fixing a fault on a dome camera, this camera was on a bracket about 3 feet from the wall, working of ladders i seen him leaning back working on this camera right above a door nothing coned/taped off etc...how much has he saved by cutting corners and not making safe the work area???if one has to do it all have to do it..than we'll have a level playing field....it should have been a picker job..imo :hmm:

Never will be level though with the 'I'm not paying for anything' mentality of customers. While this is the case there will always be the 'I laugh in the face of danger' style of servicing as it's cheaper.

I've done loads of jobs before off ladders that really needed a cherry picker but I wouldn't have got the job and someone else with ladders would have done it. I do know if I do a job off ladders though bending over backwards isn't a good idea. ;)

FORGET "NOT A GOOD IDEA"illegal illegal illegal even though I have tried to high light the "actual situation" still it does not seem to sink into the general grey matter its not just that you are probably competant the employer has to PROVE with training that you are????????????? if not start putting money aside for court fines guys!!!!!!!

thats the politically correct term i take it..... :( its not that people dont know how to climb steps..its more on the risk taking we all have done in the past with steps and ladders..a fall from even 3 feet could end up with any of us being what YOU term a spacker...

Dont take the word spacker the wrong way it just means prat or whatever. Yes we have all over reached on a pair of steps or ladders but it dosent matter how many courses you go on we will still do it. My point was if the employee over reaches and falls off then it is there fault no one elses.

If you are over reaching you know your doing it and if you fall off you know you have done wrong.

I really can't be ar**** with it anymore.

Referring to the last line on that paragraph: Last year I was servicing an alarm in a house. I needed to check the sensor on the landing, so I skipped merrily upstairs with my 3 tread steps, opened them on the landing and started to climb up them without any thought of any danger.

The next thing I knew, I was cascading down 13 steps and crashed into the front door. The second step on the stepladder had broken away at one side as I trod on it. Luckily, I wasn't hurt. I just had 1 small scratch on my hand, but it could have been very nasty.

I hadn't noticed any weakness on the stepladders, but I now check our ladders and stepladders on a regular basis.

Sorry but...... :roflmao:

I did similar as an apprentice... pendant light at the top of the stairs needed to be shortened as it was clashing with a cupboard door. The electrician I was with allegedly isolated the dist booard.

I managed to disconnect the pendant but at the point where I ran my fingers and thumbs down the brown and blue to straighten the cores i copped a packet straight across the chest and flew backwards down the stairs like something out of die hard !!
