Guest Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 I'm currently studying a C&G in Alarm Installation, and really want to get into the industry as soon as possible, but I'm somewhat concerned.I'm on a fairly good wage for the work I do at the minute, and the only opening I've seen at the minute is working as a trainee on minimum wage I don't mind working for minimum wage for a maximum of 12 months, but do many companys guarentee work, and is the increase in wages much after 12 months if you stay within the same company??? I don't want to work 12 months on
secboy Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 once youve done the course i would say you should get somewhere between trainee and engineer wage..there is a shortage of engineers but any decent employer will be impressed by the fact you went to study in your own time and expense and will only be too glad to give you a chance...but hold onto that and dont let them take advantage... GO FOR IT MATE YOU HAVE YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR WHICH WILL KEEP YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE even if you are dumpt your on your way for a career that will pay your bills for life dont expect a meal ticket and WORK and you will be ok I promise!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest MrTrim Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Thanks for the feedback all, I'm going to finish my CV off and stop spending money for a year, , Trim
esp-protocol Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 I would simply add that while you are in the mood to learn, carry on the 1851 course and do the other modules - Access, CCTV and Fire (if they interest you). You don't necessarily want to be a jack of all but it will help keep your options open and may put you a rung above the engineer beside you applying for the same job.....

I've considered that, but at Dudley College they only cover the one section. The one job I've been looking at, the bloke mentioned putting me thru an NVQ Level 3 in Installation I presume, but I can't get hold of him at the min Oh well, thanks for the feedback all, Trim
Guest ALSEC Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Blimey 5 pound and hour, when i started in the industry i was paid 50 quid a week, or 1.25 an hour, that was only 11 years ago, and for an entire year! When I started my apprenticeship at 16 (different industry to this one) I was paid
