cjd Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 Hi. I have a galaxy 60 panel, and want to add another keypad. I know this is not a DIY kit, but I have installed it,and programmed it & tested it myself and have the engineer code. (I have NO intention of giving this to anyone). I have a already got one keypad on the system but would like to add another. The current keypad is "0" on the selector switch on the back. I've got hold of another keypad and have set its switch to "1", I've connected it to the panel but all it seems to do is beep alot, and flash a lot of *******'s across the display, if you press "esc" the beeping stops, but the **'s keep flashing. It's a "thorn" keypad. does this make a difference?? if not any ideas what I'm doing wrong. I wired up the 2nd keypad in the engineer mode, and then exited to the user mode -should I have done something else?? all suggestions welcome. thanks craig
antinode Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 I'm no Galaxy expert so take this as you will, but it sounds to me like you have an incompatable keypad. You will need to purchase a MK7 keypad for it to work on the system correctly. Just checking, is the wiring OK and is the RS485 (DATA) line to the new keypad wired in Beldon cable? Trade Member

Did you wire the keypad from the end of the existing data line ? or just straight back to the panel ? Plus the things antinode said.
norman Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 Thorn kit is encrypted and incompatible with the Galaxy's of nowaday's, there is a resistor you can change in the RKP but I would recommend a new RKP. Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool.
bellman Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 The resistor change is only for non encrypted keypads and that corrects some data line problems. If the keypad is a Thorn one it will have TS at the end of it's part number and will be encrypted. If this is the case then the only thing it's good for is holding the door open. :'( Norms advice is good, replace it with a Mk7. Oh, and don't forget to wire it in belden screened cable NOT in 8 core. Regards Bellman Service Engineer and all round nice bloke ) The views above are mine and NOT those of my employer.
cjd Posted March 11, 2006 Author Posted March 11, 2006 thanks for all your advice, think I will just list the keypad back on ebay, and pick up an MK7!! sounds much easier tha fiddling with resistors. Just for hastings - i wired the 2nd keypad straight into the panel not ont h ed of the data line.
Guest Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 i wired the 2nd keypad straight into the panel not ont h ed of the data line. That would require you to add another resistor at the keypad and alter links at the panel. Have you done that?
hastings Posted March 12, 2006 Posted March 12, 2006 That would require you to add another resistor at the keypad and alter links at the panel. Have you done that? Exactly
cjd Posted March 12, 2006 Author Posted March 12, 2006 no I haven't done that. If I wired the 2nd keypad to the current one would it make any difference i.e would I have to add any other resistors etc?? like I said, I know this isn't a DIY kit, but I'm quite proud of myself for what I've done on the system so far, and anything that doesn't involve fiddling with the panel too much would be better.
Guest Posted March 12, 2006 Posted March 12, 2006 If I wired the 2nd keypad to the current one would it make any difference i.e would I have to add any other resistors etc?? How is the existing keypad wired, in what cable and what resistors have you fitted to what? Also, are there any other devices on the data line?
